Our biennial celebration of local artistic talent.

 

 

 

 

Disintegration and Renewal: constructed works of Shirley Thomas
August 31 – September 29
Reception: Thursday, August 31 at 5 p.m.

Human activity – damage and repair – is traced across the surface of Thomas’ works. This is art that queries the relationship between condition and value, and recognizes that disintegration yields renewal.

 
  Cul-de-Sac: Art from a Suburban Nation
September 14 – October 17
Reception: Thursday, September 14 at 5 p.m.
Opening night music provided by the
Spiral Joy Band.

A dozen contemporary artists’ take on the ‘burbs. Multiple viewpoints, multiple media.

 

 

 

Sharp Pencil: The Political Satire of Julio Martinez San Jose
October 3 – November 3
Reception: Tuesday, October 3 at 5 p.m.


Trained as an architect, Martinez San Jose has turned his draughtsmanship in other directions. Influenced by Swift and Goya but responding to the political climate of our time, his drawings are sharp barbs thrown at authority of every kind.

 

 

 

  SI-LA-GI: New Art from Hungary
October 12 – November 10

A Hungarian Buddhist, artist, and filmmaker, SI-LA-GI believes that “the task of a work of art is to emanate positive energy; to pull down walls; in certain cases to create firm spiritual foundations in others.” Part of the East/Central Europe Culture Festival.

An exhibition of art from kindergarten through high school programs in the Montgomery County Public Schools where Professor Richard Bay's student teachers are placed.

Moments of frozen time reflect the artist’s memories of Magnitogorsk. Part of the East/Central Europe Culture Festival.

RU Ceramics
November 28 – January 17

Ceramic works by RU students in Professor Drew Dodson’s ceramics classes.

Graduating students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs exhibit their best works. Additional work will be displayed at the RU Art Museum Downtown (Bondurant Center, 1129 East Main St.).

 

 

 

 

 

  Benny Carter
January 15 – March 20
Reception: Monday, January 15 at 5 p.m.

Benny Carter is a Visionary/Outsider artist. He lives in Mayodan, North Carolina and his work has been shown nationally and internationally. Currently he has works at the American Visionary Museum in Baltimore and at The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State University. His work consists of paintings and three-dimensional constructions.

 

 

Guarded Gestures
January 11 – March 10
Reception: Thursday, January 11 at 5 p.m.

Artworks that act as filters or buffers between the artist and the outside world. Much of the art is wearable.

  Graduate Art Students’ Association Exhibition

RU graduate art studio students mount their own installation.

 

 

 

  Beyond the Tartan IX: David Hodge
February 12 – March 3
Reception: Monday, February 12 at 5 p.m.

One of the first to receive the BFA degree from RU, Hodge has been a graphic designer for 20 years. This exhibition presents 25 works spanning those two decades.

 

 

 

  Alison Weld
March 22 – May 11
Reception: Thursday, March 22 at 5 p.m.

Fake fur, vinyl, and artificial flowers are juxtaposed to expressionistic brushwork in paintings that speak to the unsteady balance between public and private realms.

Works by RU students in Professor Halide Salam’s mixed media seminar.
